"The model for my works is nature in every respect. In the shell of a sunflower seed, in the pupa stage of the privet hawk moth, in the grain of wheat I find an excerpt from a development process. Although the cycle of nature is unstoppable, I want to pause with my art to look at individual stages isolated and entirely for themselves. My way to trace these is the sculptural process, for me a digging for the essential by taking away the non-essential. The constantly transforming forms of nature lead me to ever new motifs that combine with images from my memory, for example, from architecture, technology, mythology, religion and much more. The intersections of these images then often reveal archaic forms that I sculpt in dialogue with materials borrowed from nature. With my artistic work I react daily anew to the present, which is in a permanent imbalance of creative and destructive forces. With my artworks I want to awaken the sensitivity for the (exceedingly threatened) creation. In the search and discovery of forms from nature, I am always amazed at the surrounding us, tirelessly renewing diversity." - Paul Diestel
