Sheila Furlan sews everyday objects but also human bodies into a transparent skin of organza fabric. The result is transparent, thin-skinned works that, through their membrane-like surface, provide glimpses of interior spaces and show dialectical interplays between inside and outside, between space, transparency, and volume. Subsequently, the object or body slips out of its skin again, leaving behind a fragile cocoon that stores the memory of its original state. But also writings of selected letters, secret messages and drawings can be found like traces of memory carefully embroidered on gossamer silk fabric and stretched on fragile frame racks. Here, both the front and the back of the embroidered works are exposed. Long threads hang from the ends of words and sentences or connect them to each other in a content-rich manner.
