The original source of Eberhard Ross' work is the observation of nature, its processes and rhythms. He is particularly interested in their systematics, which he translates into his own pictorial rhythms in a partly mimetic process. An essential component of his paintings is the transformation of music, or sound.
"refugium" is conceived as a resting space in which the viewer is given the opportunity to have an image-sound experience. Ross's delicately shimmering and melodically pulsating "laudate," "fermata," and "speicher" images create a sound of silence; the space becomes a kind of refuge. In Ross's current works, the individual layers of finely layered images merge into a vibrant, colorful unity, making the composition glow I sound in a fascinating way. Indeed, the tones of these compositions extend far into space. To pause, to feel the sound of color, as if painting were music - that is his wish for the viewer.
