Eberhard Ross

»refugium«

The original source of Eberhard Ross' work is the observation of nature, its processes and rhythms. He is particularly interested in their systematics, which he translates into his own pictorial rhythms in a partly mimetic process. An essential component of his paintings is the transformation of music, or sound.

"refugium" is conceived as a resting space in which the viewer is given the opportunity to have an image-sound experience. Ross's delicately shimmering and melodically pulsating "laudate," "fermata," and "speicher" images create a sound of silence; the space becomes a kind of refuge.  In Ross's current works, the individual layers of finely layered images merge into a vibrant, colorful unity, making the composition glow I sound in a fascinating way. Indeed, the tones of these compositions extend far into space. To pause, to feel the sound of color, as if painting were music - that is his wish for the viewer.

Julia Behrens on current works by Eberhard Ross

"A delicate shimmering and melodic pulsation characterizes the latest works of Eberhard Ross (...).

Through a time-intensive and meditative painting method, the renowned artist achieves color effects of great tonal quality on his square and rectangular canvases.

This is why the term "fermata" used in music is so appropriate - a resting sign where a note is held beyond its note value. Eberhard Ross, who is represented by galleries in Canada, England, Italy, South Korea, Germany, works in layers, applying finely chiseled, intricate patterns to the final, still damp surface of oil, so that the colors of the underlying layers form a filigree, often barely discernible lineament. The background and the surface are only finely contrasted, both being lighter in the center of the picture than at the edges, where the softly graded gradients become brighter. Precisely because the contrasts between the planes are no longer as great as in the artist's earlier works, they merge into a vibrant, colorful unity and make the composition glow in a fascinating way. In fact, the tones of these yellow, green and blue compositions extend vividly far into the room. And it is precisely this effect that causes one to pause in contemplation and trace the color sound, as if the painting were music. In addition, this impression is intensified by a strongly beveled orange frame, which projects a bright glow onto the wall behind the painting.

Eberhard Ross has long been inspired by natural phenomena and higher-level structures - at home in many disciplines. Now it has found an expression for these universal connections that could not be more enduring."
